Self Assmentight Essay  

When I first joined the class I thought it was going to be hard and it turned out to be hard for me. The class overall was not hard. It was just that I am not a good reader or writer and it’s very challenging for me in any english class. I had to learn how to organize my thoughts and myself when it came to taking this english class because there were deadlines that I had to meet and that was extremely challenging for me. 

In phases one we had to write about a meaningful moment in your language. This essay really helped me express myself a lot and say a lot of the challenges that I had growing up with my academics. I had written about how I felt very different because I was bylingal and it was extremely hard for me to fit in because I was currently getting extra help. Also I had explained in that essay my struggles and the anxiety that I used to get and still get but not as often. This essay helped me embrace the fact that I am different and that it’s okay. There are a lot of different types of learners and throughout the years I have changed as a learner but I still struggle. Everybody learns in different ways and I just learn a little more slowly  than other people. I really enjoyed writing this essay. It helped me see how much I have grown as a learner and how  much I can develop.

In phrases two I really learned how to dissect an article and get a deeper understanding of whatever I am reading or analyzing. I did my rhetorical analysis essay on the story “Mother Tongue” and I learned so much on how you can break up the article and understand the different parts of text. This essay taught me that there’s not only a central idea and supporting details  that make up an article there is much more. Amy Tan used a lot of different forms to get her point of view to her audience. I also learned different texquest that I can incorporate into my writing that can make my writing much better. 

In phases 3 research I did an essay on open heart surgery. I personally found this easy extremely hard for me because I was more based on facts and evidence. It was hard for me to get a sentence type of information that had to relate to the topic that I had to write about. I find anything research based writing hard for me. Writing this essay did help me realise that I need more practise when it comes to writing research essays. 

Phase 4 I know that I tried my best but it was really hard for me because I know the type of student that I am and that is the type of student that is hands- on and I learn betting when I am being taught in person vs being taught online. I already know that I struggle with english and to make matters worse I had to take a english course online. It’s not easy to adapt to a new routine out of nowhere and I know that it was stressful for the teachers to not only the students, 

everybody was stressed. Overall, I think I did  a good job in the english course but I know that I could of done much better.

Research Essay 

Open Heart Surgery

As a 3 month old baby it’s very difficult to survive an open heart surgery, but not impossible. A lot of women over 4.2% die from getting open heart surgery and 2.2% of men die during the praeger and  or after. There’s a lot of factors that can cause someone  to have open heart surgery at any age but it can also come with many risks.

There’s a lot of reasons that a person at any age can have open heart surgery. In order to have an open heart surgery they would have to be born with a heart disease or develop a heart disease in your lifetime. Your heart has veins called the venae cavae which are the two largest veins in the human body that connect to your heart. There’s one vein on the top of your heart which leads blood flow and oxygen to your brain and one vein on the bottom of your heart which leads blood flow and oxygen to your body. If your heart veins are in the opposite direction, both veins are going up to your brain and you have no blood circulation tores your body or the opposite way you would have to have a mandatory open heart surgery. Therefore, there are a lot of reasons for someone to have an open heart surgery.

Smoking when you are pregnant can cause harm to you and your unborn child physically and mentely. Smoking is very toxic to an unborn child because it can have very bad effects on the child. For example, the child can be born with heart problems and other severe conditions. Smoking when you’re pregnant can cause your baby to be born premature, when the mother doesn’t meet the full 9 months of pregnancy and the baby is born earlier and the baby can be born very small. Smoking before, during and after your pregnancy can harm you and your child. Smoking is addicting and having to quit because you want to get pregnant or because your pregnancy can be extremely hard because you’re addicted to it. Smoking can cause a pregnant woman to have a lot of excessive bleeding and a lot of tearing in the placenta. When a woman smokes during her pregnancy she can experience mental health problems during and after the pregnancy. After or during the pregnancy the stress of the pregnancy can lead to any type of substance abuse by the pregnant women and that can affect not only the unborn child but it can also affect the mental health of the mother.  Therefore, smoking can harm you and the baby when you smoke during a pregnancy. 

In conclusion, there’s a lot of factors that can cause someone  to have open heart surgery at any age but it can also come with many risks. The unborn baby can have numerous health problems and the  mother can have health problems when they don’t quit smoking during a pregnancy.  An open heart surgery is a very difficult procedure and can cause death but it’s not impossible to survive it.

Rhetorical Analysis Essay

     People get miss treated all the time for different reasons and it’s not good. People don’t know how to treat people equally if they don’t look or act the same or “normal”.  The story of ”Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan had a lot of different ways of getting her story across to the audience. She used a lot of imagery meaning that you can create a picture inside of your heart just by reading. Amy Tan followed the story of her mother struggling to speak English and people miss treating her because she doesn’t know how to speak proper English. She explains her mother’s struggles and the way she has helped her mother with dealing with people that mistreat her. 

Amy Tan was born in China but lives in America. Her background makes her story more believable and reliable because she wasn’t born in the United States of America english was not her first language. When you move to the United States and you don’t know the languages it’s very hard because people are very cruel and will try to take advantage of you just because you don’t know how to communicate in the same language. Amy Tan uses evidence to emphasize her mothers situations and everything that happens to develop her argument. For example, her mother got diagnosed with cancer and the doctors claimed that they lost her CAT scan. Her mother had a difficult time trying to speak to the doctors because of the language barrier. Due to the fact that her mother couldn’t speak proper english they refused to help her. In the world you can see a lot of people abusing their power and trying to gain power over people that are different.  Amy Tan develops the argument and the text using different strategies. For example she uses imagery in the text because when you are readying her story you can imagine and feel the characters pain or happened though the reading. Amy Tan connects with her audience in many ways and in a way she makes the story connect to a lot of people and that makes the audience understand and connect to the story more. 

The author uses ethos and pathos throughout the text. She uses eathose because she incorporates the background of  the characters in her stories. For example, her background is that she was not born in the united states as well as her mother and that they are immigrants in the United States. The author’s sexuality orientation doesn’t change the audience’s perspective because just because she is a woman and not a man or her sexuality is different it doesn’t matter because she is still going to get the point across  to her audiences. Amy tan also uses pathos because she shows emotions in the story that she wrote and her mothers experience and what she went through. In the text it states, “Like others, I have described it to people as “broken” or “fractured” english.” She was ashamed of her mothers  improper english showing emotions in the text which is indicating that she used pathos in the text. Amy Tan used both ethos and pathos to convince her audience of her argument. 

The rhetorical analysis is significant to to Amy Tans argument because she followed to story of her mother getting miss treated by people making fun of her just because she didn’t know how to speak proper english, Amy Tan was ashamed of her mothers english but still tried to help her the best she can and tried do defend her mother in any way possible when she would witness people discrimination against her mother just because she was different. The rhetorical analysis is important because the audience can get a better understanding of the text and get a better understanding of the text. Amy tan uses ethos and pathos to develop her argument in the text and get her point across to the audience so the audience gets a better understanding of her point of view and her argument. My parents don’t know how to speak proper english and I would always try to help her translate things like letters, phone calls  or even conversations that she was having with people.  I was never ashamed of the fact that my parents couldn’t speak english because my parents have a strong attitude and know how to defend themselves in any language.  

WLLN Essay

     A meaningful moment in my language was when I was little in elementary school in the third grade. I was put in an ESL class which means English second language. Being in an ESL class made me feel self-conscious about myself because I was constantly being pulled out of my classes. I was put with a small number of kids that also were a part of the same ESL class. Sometimes the teachers will only pull me out of the class by myself so I can get extra help because I had trouble with speaking, writing, and reading. I always felt different because students weren’t like me. My classmates used to make fun of me because I couldn’t read well out loud,  I used to stumble on words that I couldn’t pronounce, and I would get mad at myself and give up. I was never a shy student even though I didn’t know how to read, write, and speak well. Growing up struggling with reading, writing and speaking was hard for me, and still to this day I have some challenges. 

    I started being pulled out of class in the third grade for extra help. I never really understood why I was getting pulled out, I know that it was to help me but since I was really young I didn’t see how this was benefiting me. One day the teacher pulled me out by myself and it was to practice spelling. I was extremely nervous for this day because I was given a few words that I have to memorize how to spell and I remember memorizing and practicing the words how to see them, how to spell them, and how to use them in content. The teacher came to the classroom and pulled me out. I was extremely nervous, my heart was racing and I was not feeling confident at all. When we got to the room we did a few breathing exercises that she taught me how to do it every time I was nervous about something. This exercise really helped need to calm down and relax my breathing. After we finished the exercises we sat down. I felt confident in what I was about to do but when we started I Completely forgot everything that I studied for I forgot the words. How do you spell them? I just got extremely nervous and overwhelmed with different emotions. I will remember me breaking down. I said I give up. I’m so confused I thought I didn’t know how to speak English I don’t know what I’m doing. I broke down. I remember me at eight years old just giving up. 

     If you had to take an ESL class you have to take the ESL test. This test will test you on your reading, writing, and listening. If you’re an ESL student, are you still taking the test you will continue taking the test constantly until you pass it? When you pass it you don’t have to take it, you don’t have to take the ESL test ever again. My first time taking this test was in the third grade at the end of the year near the state exams. Remember me getting so nervous that I got sick to my stomach and I couldn’t finish the test and my mom had to pick me up from school. I had to make up the test on a different day. When I took the test on another day my teachers did everything in their power to make me feel comfortable and I really appreciate it. My teacher said that because I got through all my anxiety. As I got older I didn’t get as much test anxiety because I learned how to manage anxiety but, I still get really nervous when I have to take a test. The teachers have done everything in their power to help me become better students. For example, they have taught me how to control my breathing, and when  I’m nervous about something, how to close my eyes and relax, how to take my time on things, etc.

     I stopped taking the ESL test in the 8th grade. I finally felt accomplished. I finally passed the ESL test but I still had a lot of work to do so I was given conditions for my learning. I get accommodations for my learning. I get extra time on tests, get tests read aloud to me, a Spanish to English dictionary and I am allowed to take the test in a separate room with fewer people.  I always felt uncomfortable because not a lot of students get accommodations but, I’ve realized that having accommodations really helped me be a better student and learn more efficiently. Having accommodations is good because I can get help with certain things but, when it comes to having your test read to you, you have to go at a certain pace no matter whether it is fast or slow. Getting help benefits me in being a better learner because I am eventually going to try to do certain things on my own. My English now is so much better I still have difficulty pronouncing words and spelling certain words also my grammar I’m still trying to work on my grammar I think grammar has been the most difficult part for me to try to understand but I can see my improvement a lot from the third grade all the way to Senior year. My experience with Language is still difficult because I grew up speaking Spanish I come from a Spanish-speaking Home and neighborhood and yes I have improved a lot on my English but I don’t want to lose my Spanish I just have to figure out a way to balance it out.
